{"id":786,"date":"2015-06-12T13:02:45","date_gmt":"2015-06-12T21:02:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.djinnaya.com\/?p=786"},"modified":"2019-04-04T17:03:31","modified_gmt":"2019-04-05T01:03:31","slug":"cooley-residency-building-new-space","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.djinnaya.com\/?p=786","title":{"rendered":"Cooley Residency: Building New Space"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m finally getting settled in at my post-CCA studio. &nbsp;At the end of the spring, at the advice of Nathan Lynch, I met with Lisa Cooley to talk about my being the first artist in residence on her property on the southern rural edge of Petaluma. &nbsp;We discovered over lunch that we had some pretty compatible ideas about art and life. &nbsp;Then I drove to her property to visit the studio.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_787\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-787\" style=\"width: 791px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.djinnaya.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/cooley_barnfield.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-787\" src=\"http:\/\/www.djinnaya.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/cooley_barnfield-980x551.jpg\" alt=\"cooley_barn_in_field\" width=\"791\" height=\"445\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.djinnaya.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/cooley_barnfield-980x551.jpg 980w, http:\/\/www.djinnaya.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/cooley_barnfield-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 791px) 100vw, 791px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-787\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is the barn that sits outside of one of the windows of the studio.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Tucked back into the hills near Olompali State Park, her home is a wonderland of nature. &nbsp;When I first came to the studio, I startled the two spotted fawns that were sleeping next to the back door. &nbsp;On my walks, I have seen eagles, hawks, coyote, deer, and the elusive tail of a fox, not to mention field mice and rats and song birds and a hundred thousand lizards.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_790\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-790\" style=\"width: 791px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.djinnaya.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/cooley_cowfield.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-790\" src=\"http:\/\/www.djinnaya.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/cooley_cowfield-980x735.jpg\" alt=\"cows in a field\" width=\"791\" height=\"593\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.djinnaya.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/cooley_cowfield-980x735.jpg 980w, http:\/\/www.djinnaya.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/cooley_cowfield-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 791px) 100vw, 791px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-790\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cows that move into the field for grazing in the late spring<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Having such a quiet rural place to visit just a quick drive&nbsp;from my urban home has led me to think more about the context of the animal &#8212;
